FAQ's About Non-Cash Donations

Securities

What are the benefits of donating securities?

  • Avoid the capital gains tax on securities held more than one year
  • Receive a charitable tax deduction for the full fair market value
  • Have greater impact: when you make a pre-tax gift of securities, we get to keep the
proceeds that would have been withheld had you sold the assets and donated the cash
    proceeds.
  • Manage your portfolio: donating appreciated securities is the best way to harvest gains
and reduce concentration in a tax-free way

*As we are not financial advisors, we recommend speaking with a tax professional before
taking action.

What are the guidelines around charitable stock gifting?

  • You can donate publicly traded stocks, mutual funds, ETFs and bonds.
To avoid capital gains tax, you must have owned the securities for more than one year
  • Stock may not be restricted; if you are giving from an employee stock plan you may need to check with your company to ensure
  • Shares must be tradable in major U.S. exchanges. This often excludes OTC or micro-cap stocks.
  • Stock options are generally not eligible as there are restrictions on transfers
If you itemize, the deduction is limited to 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI)

*As we are not financial advisors, we recommend speaking with a tax professional before
taking action.

How does the stock gifting process work?

  • Stock gifting occurs through a DTC securities transfer from the donor’s account to the nonprofit recipient’s account. What used to take hours to initiate now takes just minutes using our DonateStock easy button. (include link).
  • Once initiated, transfer instructions will be sent to your brokerage or advisor. They will submit the transfer through the DTC system.
  • You’ll be notified when the stock arrives and receive an acknowledgement letter shortly thereafter.

What if I prefer to have my advisor do it for me?

  • No problem, we make it easy for your advisor. Just direct them to our stock gifting
page and click “Donate Stock” to request transfer instructions.
  • Your advisor will be asked to provide details about the donation in an online form so we’ll be aware of the pending gift and able to quickly reconcile and acknowledge it. It takes less than 2 minutes.
  • We will provide transfer instructions to your advisor so they can initiate the gift
  • Once received, your advisor will be notified by email with the realized value and a tax receipt.
Crypto

What are the benefits of donating crypto?

  • Avoid the capital gains tax on appreciated cryptocurrencies held more than one year
  • Receive a charitable tax deduction for the full fair market value
  • Harvest gains and reduce crypto concentration in a tax-free way

*As we are not financial advisors, we recommend speaking with a tax professional before taking action.

What are the guidelines around gifting cryptocurrencies?

  • Just like securities, you can donate crypto and avoid capital gains tax on assets held for more than one year
  • Like securities, the deduction is limited to 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI)
  • Unlike securities, crypto is treated as property by the IRS. As such, donors must file a Form 8283 with their tax returns.
  • If the gift is more than $5,000, the donor must obtain a qualified appraisal and complete Section B of Form 8283 (charity signature + appraiser signature).

*As we are not financial advisors, we recommend speaking with a tax professional before taking action.

How does the crypto donation process work?

  • The process takes only a few minutes to initiate through our EasyCrypto button above.
  • You’ll be asked to specify the details of the gift (which coin and how much you plan to give)
  • We’ll provide a wallet address and a QR code for that specific transaction (cannot be re-used)
  • You’ll copy the wallet address or use the QR code in your crypto wallet to “send” the specified crypto to the destination address. It may take minutes or hours for the crypto to arrive - depending on the currency and network.
  • Once received you’ll be notified by email with a receipt to follow shortly thereafter.
Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) grants

What are the guidelines around DAF grants?

  • As the DAF account owner, you may submit a request to make a grant to our organization. The DAF administrator has legal control over the funds and must approve the grant request.
  • DAF grants are restricted to charitable gifts where no value or benefit is derived by the donor. This precludes using DAF grants to fulfill a pledge, purchase sponsorship, register for a gala, or participate in an auction, among other cases.
  • The DAF administrator will send payment to the recipient along with the donor’s information.
  • Note: the recipient will not receive a tax receipt as the deduction was previously taken when the donor contributed to the DAF (i.e. no additional deduction for the grant).

How does the EasyDAF button work?

  • You can initiate a DAF grant directly on our site using our EasyDAF button in minutes.
  • You’ll be asked to specify your DAF and the details of your grant - this will enable us to reconcile the gift and thank you for your support.
  • You’ll then be asked to copy our tax ID or EIN and click to be redirected to your DAF login page.
  • We will not ask for your login credentials. Rather, you’ll log in directly to your DAF and submit a grant request, using our Tax ID (rather than our name) to find us in your DAF’s directory of nonprofits.
  • You’ll then submit the grant as you normally would. Armed with the information you provided we’ll be able to quickly reconcile and confirm receipt of your grant.
Qualified Charitable Distributions

What are the benefits of Qualified Charitable Donations?

  • Offset the RMD tax on your IRA.
  • Reduce your Adjusted Gross Income, resulting in a lower tax rate on all income.
  • By contributing from your IRA now (vs. later) you can shield your current income and keep more money in the bank.

*As we are not financial advisors, we recommend speaking with a tax professional before taking action.

What are the guidelines around Qualified Charitable Donations?

  • Age: donor must be age 701⁄2 or older on the date of the distribution.
  • Accounts allowed:
    • Traditional IRAs and inherited IRAs; Roth IRAs are permitted but usually provide no tax benefit.
    • SEP or SIMPLE IRAs are allowed only if there are no employer contributions for that year.
    • QCDs cannot be made directly from 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), or TSP accounts (donor must roll the account into an IRA before making the QCD).
  • Annual limits: $111,000 per individual in 2026.
  • Donor may not receive anything of value in return for their QCD (e.g. no tickets, meals, membership).
  • QCDs may not be made to donor-advised funds, supporting organizations, or most private foundations.
  • QCDs are paid by the IRA custodian to the qualifying 501(c)(3) public charity.
  • QCD amounts are excluded from the donor’s taxable income (no charitable deduction is taken).

*As we are not financial advisors, we recommend speaking with a tax professional before taking action.

How does the EasyQCD button work? (coming soon)

  • The EasyQCD button streamlines the process with a docusign-like experience in which the donor provides the information needed to satisfy IRS requirements in an easy, intuitive interface.
  • Depending on the donor’s IRA custodian, the QCD instructions form will either be sent by GivingIQ to the donor’s custodian, or the donor will be asked to download the form and submit to their custodian directly.
  • The QCD payment will come from the IRA custodian to the nonprofit recipient.
